Salem’s Lot – Stephen King

My very first Indy Book… although I had no idea at the time what it would turn out to be…

I’ve seen some books in my time. I’ve handled the best made in the King world and others. I’ve seen books that I found blew me away. BUT…Nothing and I mean nothing has taken my breath away like this one. This book has been THREE YEARS in the making. I implore you to have a look… feast your eyes and my only regret is you could not enjoy this in person like I am able to do. This is now my number #1 King collectable. Hands down. This took my breath away when I opened the box from Rich Tong of Lyra’s Books.

This book is one of one and was not sold to the public.

Over three years ago, I began to search for a page block to Salems’ Lot with the prints. Not an easy task. I wanted to do my own King book. My good friend David Williamson found them for me… then to choose a binder. Well Rich Tong from Lyra’s Books was just making a splash with his upcoming Stardust and we became friendly. I asked him to undertake the most high end book he could possibly make. I said it’s going to be something never done before. He agreed. He was down and up for the task. I then contacted Dave Christensen who did the original cover in the 1st Edition of the book to totally re-create the exact artwork and to have the piece bound in. He agreed and was excited to do so. Then I wanted the newest / hottest artist today working in the King artwork world. Well we all know who that is! I asked Francois Vaillancourt to do my favourite scene as well to be bound in. He was also excited.

The attention to detail here was important. It was my passion project. It consumed me for months on end how to make this bigger and better than anything before it. I had to have a King signature and my very good friend Paul Suntup was able to help me there. It’s bound into the book with raised bubble glass to protect it. The marbling is done by hand out of Paper Wilds by Freya Scott. I also had David get me a high res scan of the letter King sent to Jerad praising his work. Rich had the idea to inset it into the solander box in gold leaf. I also contacted my mate Simon Mason to get me a very high res scan of the Marsten House from Jerry’s prints and what you see bound into the box is etched glass with the house in blood to really bring the fire. You really can feel and sense this process in person. I had never seen etched glass used on a book and Rich’s answer is always “let’s try!!” 😝

Rich Tong was not messing around. He wanted to go higher end after he got the taste for it (blood? haha) and made so much work for himself this quite literally took him over two years of trial and error to produce the final. The man is a master of his craft. The best if you ask me. He did Bradel Binding and cutting out the leather was immensely impossible to do in one piece but he did…. making a cross on the book when opened. The spine when opened fully has roads in raised Leather… and wait for it… re-creating the town King used for the book. Those are roads. The town he used is Durham, Maine. He stated this in the novel Danse Macabre. Rich took this on himself and blew it out of the water. The covers are so substantial, beefy, and surreal. I have never seen a book come close to this in design and execution. The sprayed pages look like night and blood… the gold stamping is perfect. This is, and I will say it… the best King book ever made. I mean it. I’ve seen every single one. In my opinion this is the best one.

This is a labour of love for both Rich and I. I thank him from the bottom of my heart. The book is dedicated to my wife. I dedicated it to her for letting me spend most of my time in this massive sandbox I call the book world. She is kind and she is understanding…. if you know me.. you know how much time I do spend here. So please enjoy the pictures. The book is huge and heavy and has a presentation and preseance to it that commands your attention in a room. Thank you 🙏 to every person involved and who helped me along the way. This book turned out to be a “trial run” of sorts for The Gunslinger. The overwhelming love for what I had done here pushed me to make that book and now there are many more in the Indy pipeline.

SO… Talk soon my friends.  Now back to playing in the “sandbox”… of the wonderful book world….
best, Kris
